Jobs

We are always interested in receiving applications from highly motivated Bachelor-, Master- and PhD-students as well as postdoctoral candidates.

The Department of Experimental Physics I (Physics of living matter) at the University of Bayreuth, Germany invites applications for a

Postdoc/Scientist position (m/f/d)

in the field of Applied/Experimental Physics with a special focus on advanced light microscopy techniques to investigate living cells, organoids, tissues, and biofabricates. Specifically, the project is dedicated to the refinement and application of a customized light-sheet microscope within the DFG-funded research consortium SFB/TRR 225 Biofabrication. Besides a technical component for setting up and running the instrument (optics, opto-mechanics, beam alignment, custom-made control software), the project is mainly dedicated to the monitoring and quantification of the dynamic self-organization of living specimens, ranging from single cells over organoids and embryos to synthetical 3D compound structures consisting of cells and hydrogels. The project is therefore at the center of the overall research focus of the lab, which is to elucidate dynamic self-organization processes in living matter (see also our research).

Applicants are expected to have earned a PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, Biophysics, Physical Chemistry, Optical Engineering or Cell/Molecular Biology with proven experience on advanced light microscopy techniques. The position (initially a temporary contract for a maximum of two years) will be paid according to TV-L E13

Applications from handicapped persons will be favored when all other qualifications are equal. The University of Bayreuth is an equal opportunity employer and we therefore especially encourage women to apply.

Please send inquiries and meaningful applications (CV and a brief motivation letter, and contacts for references) until 5th September 2024 to: sekretariat.ep1@uni-bayreuth.de

The Department of Experimental Physics I (Physics of living matter) at the University of Bayreuth, Germany invites applications for a

PhD position (f/m/d)

in the field of Applied/Experimental Physics with a special focus on the dynamics of living cells. Specifically, the project is dedicated to the investigation and quantification of cell migration and self-organization in the presence of external cues, such as chemical gradients, varying substrate stiffness, or electric fields. The actual project work is mainly based on a combination of soft lithography, advanced light microscopy approaches, and quantitative image analysis, with basic aspects of cell biology for sample preparation and handling. This truly interdisciplinary project is therefore at the center of the overall research focus of the lab, which is to elucidate dynamic self-organization processes in living matter (see also our research).

A university degree (Master or equivalent) in Physics, Biophysics, Physical Chemistry, Optical/Biomedical Engineering, or Cell/Molecular Biology with proven experience on advanced light microscopy techniques is required. Candidates should have an interest in interdisciplinary work, which is supported on-site by a matching PhD program (BayNAT). The ability to work independently and in a structured manner as well as commitment and team spirit are expected.

The position is available from October 2024 onwards and is limited according to the German Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (fixed-term contract law for academic staff for a maximum of four years) as it is intended for personal academic qualification (doctorate). Payment according to 65% TV-L E13 is envisaged, details of the employment depend on both, legal and personal conditions. Furthermore, the employment conditions of the Bavarian Higher Education and Research Act (BayHIG) apply as hiring requirements.

The University of Bayreuth appreciates the diversity of its employees and is explicitly committed to the goal of equal opportunities for men and women. Women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply. Persons with severe disabilities will be given preferential consideration if they are equally qualified.

Please send inquiries and meaningful applications (CV, detailed transcript of records of BSc and MSc degrees, and a brief motivation letter) until 15th September 2024 to: sekretariat.ep1@uni-bayreuth.de
